Bamboo
They say bamboo grows so fast
it will rise through a man's heart
in a day or two
It must have been like that
for him
the bamboo still there
rising into the sky
or as a child I thought
it did
it was very tall by then
their daughter
was a cancer researcher
at NIH directing her anger at
the bamboo still there
rising into the sky
the house, the lawn,
the bamboo, clearly in her
hand stilled
like a museum, they took
me through to see the old
toys left in the box
everything seemed to stop
ten years before I was born
the bamboo still there
rising into the sky
They say bamboo grows so fast
it will rise through a man's heart
in a day or two
It must have been like that
for him
